The national President of Private University Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG), Richard Odame, has expressed disappointment in President John Dramani Mahama’s government, saying it is insensitive to the plight of private students.
This follows the President’s non-mention of private tertiary education in his State of the Nation Address last week.
[contextly_sidebar id=”zhDjy1JcMNySM97US6eILzrn8bNd4sTi”]Mr Odame expressed his disappointment saying, “We feel very disappointed and we ask ourselves that are we really in a country where our needs as private university students are considered or we even considered in the first place as private university students.”
“Over the years, we’ve been channeling our grievances, petitioning the presidency through the Ministry of Education, although there are certain assurances certain promises that we’ve received, from the State of the Nation’s Address, it seems to be a lip service, one of the mere promises made, to assure us that there is hope or there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”
Richard Odame was however optimistic that subsequent Governments, other than this Mahama led administration, will adequately address the plight of private students.
“The ruling government really does not consider the private institutions as part of its plans, but I know that private institutions have a future, because it was during a particular administration that private universities started and these universities were excelling very well and receiving numerous benefits, but there is this new government where we do not receive these benefits, so we have a future but it depends on the administration.”
