The Lebanese Embassy in Ghana has held a seminar for students benefiting from scholarship packages sponsored by the Lebanese community in Ghana.
The Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, Ali H. Halabi, chaired the seminar.
The seminar was aimed at providing the students a platform to discuss issues affecting Ghana and the world. The seminar was the third of its kind being held in the country.
The students were drawn from the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
They discussed the topic dubbed “An examination of constitutional governance in Ghana” led by Maureen Bansah, a student of the University of Ghana School of Law.
In his introductory speech, the the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, stressed on the need to safeguard the constitution of the country.
“We need to safeguard our own constitution and stir the developmental process. We must ensure that the right things are done, since no one is above the law,” he stated.
Also present was a member of the first Lebanese family to settle in Ghana, Naaman Achkar.
In his contribution, Naaman said that it would be important if Ghana got a constitutional council, which will be different from the Supreme Court.
“I think it is important that we get a constitutional council. Even in the United States, there is a constitutional council that is different from the court,” he said.
One of the participants, Gloria Amoah, a student of KNUST said “this has been a gathering wherein young brains in the legal and journalism fields discussed the issues which our constitutional dispensation brings to the fore. Our passion, through this seminar has been aroused, to take active part in broadening the constitutional process of the nation.”
