High-jumper Abigail Kwarteng was the highlight of the first Athletics Open Championships organised by the Ghana Athletics Association at the El-Wak Stadium on Saturday.

The 19-year old managed to meet the qualifying mark of 1.75 metres for the high jump event at this year’s African Athletics Championships.

However, Shepherd Agbeko and Beatrice Gyaman could not follow Kwarteng’s lead in their respective events.

Agbeko won the 200m event in a time of 21.77 seconds but his time was below the qualifying mark of 20.74 for the African Championships and 20.50 seconds for the Olympic Games.

Gyaman placed second in the women’s 100m final behind Dorcas Gyimah and Cecilia Asekiya.

All the athletes could not meet the African Championships’ entry mark of 11.61 seconds.

Emmanuel Appiah-Kubi won the men’s 100m event while Richard Barnor was tops in the men’s javelin.

Milo Marathon winner in the women’s category, Lariba Sakat, won the women’s 10,000 metres in a time of 37:45.02 minutes.
