State transport operator, Metro Mass Transit (MMT), has announced that it will foot the bills incurred by some passengers who survived the Wednesday night fatal accident involving one of their buses.

A statement from MMT signed by its Acting Head of Communications, Bernice Akologo said, “we have also taken steps to take up the medical bills which would arise as a result of the road crash.”

According to the Police, 53 people have so far lost their lives with 23 persons who survived with varying injuries  when the MMT bus collided head-on with a cargo track on the Kintampo-Tamale road.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LpGd1QtRdmbjMA3xZYbSuSsCrUUeM7ol”]The company explained that it was around “7:40pm on Wednesday, [when] we received news that MMT bus with registration number AS 7131 Y was involved in a crash at Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo Region.”

The statement added that although the Police is investigating the matter, “MMT would also use its internal mechanisms to do in-depth investigations into the road crash.”

“It is really a sad moment for the Company as we are in a state of mourning for our late colleague and our cherished passengers. We console all bereaved families whilst wishing those injured speedy recovery. We have our men on the grounds to assist and also to obtain adequate information for further investigation to be carried,” the statement added.

The company further urged Ghanaians especially those who patronize their services to be calm saying, “we will continue to adopt all strategies to remain the safest, the most reliable and efficient means of transport.”

Although police investigations are yet to establish the cause of the accident, unconfirmed reports are that, the driver of the  bus had a break failure.
