The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), is expected to appear the before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Water Resources Works and Housing today [Thursday], following reports of acute water shortage in Nsawam and its surrounding towns.
The water situation in the area compelled members of the committee to visit the place, two days ago, to assess the situation and to be informed on the appropriate steps to take to solve the crisis.
[contextly_sidebar id=”6l7RIN5Dcq1BB8hPD9KDCgWrtN6ELNwL”]Member of Parliament (MP) for Shai Osudoku and Chairman of the Committee, David Tetteh Asumeng told Citi News in an interview that “we are summoning the company to meet the Committee on Thursday so we can see the way forward.”
Tetteh Asumeng bemoaned the water situation in Nsawam and said they are hoping to quiz the officials of the GWCL in order to ascertain some of the measures being put in place to reverse the crisis.
He argued that a number of agencies including the Water Resources Commission were supposed to advise the company “on the trend of the life of water.”
“…So we thought that those organizations could collaborate to ascertain the life of the water but that collaboration was not done. So we were also upset that there wasn’t enough advice from the Water Resources Commission,” he added.
David Tetteh Asumeng explained that they have approved huge budgetary allocation to the sector, lamenting that, “people are being paid, people have taken money so they must be held responsible for their actions and inaction.”
For over a month, residents in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality have been without potable drinking water, compelling them to rely on polluted water sources for domestic activities.
