The two factions in the decade-long chieftaincy conflict in Bunkprugu in the Northern Region, have agreed to allow the National Peace Council to mediate a peace plan to resolve the impasse.
Women and children have over the years suffered the consequences of the brawls between the Jamong and Jafog Bimoba clans, who have fiercely been fighting over the Bimoba traditional area paramountcy.
Recent clashes in the area have resulted in the death of four persons and the burning of several houses. Hundreds of residents of the township have also fled the area.
The Presidential Candidate of the People`s National Convention (PNC), Dr. Edward Mahama, who revealed the decision of the Peace Council to Citi News after he personally made an appeal to them on Tuesday, expressed the hope that the council`s mediation will bring the conflict to an end.
He stated, “We met both factions to come up with a peace plan that will address the issue once and for all. After the meeting, they agreed to allow the national Peace Council to mediate.”
He added that, “ We said we know the matter is before the court and the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, but you cannot get peace when you area killing one another, so we asked if it is acceptable to them for the national Peace Council to come and mediate peace for you and they agreed. After this, we have to come with a proposal and a documentary to give to the Peace Council to begin the mediation process.”
