Vodafone’s enterprising initiative, the “Female Engineering Students Sponsorship programme” (FESSP) enters its fifth year this month.
The scholarship programme, launched in 2011, has so far sponsored over 30 beneficiaries for further studies and nurtured them to work with the Telecom Company through internship, national service and subsequent full-time employee roles.
FESSP fundamentally empowers and embraces young female engineering students from various Universities in line with the company’s unfettered commitment to developing brilliant female graduates.
This week, the initiative has taken a step further by sponsoring four final-year female students from three Universities – University of Ghana, Science and Technology and the Ghana Technology University. The comprehensive scholarship package includes the payment of academic user fees, provision of electronic devices, free airtime, money for books as well as a unique opportunity for the ladies to participate in Vodafone’s flagship programmes.
Commenting during the brief presentation ceremony at the company’s Headquarters, Haris Broumidis, Chief Executive of Vodafone Ghana said:
“We see this as directly in line with our commitment to nurture brilliant female students and furnish them with work experience to prepare them for the job market. I will urge the beneficiaries to show eagerness in grabbing every opportunity that comes their way in order to be successful. As a company, we will continue to act as the catalyst in making their dreams come true.”
On her part, the Human Resources Director of Vodafone Ghana, Stella Agyenim-Boateng said:
“We believe in equal opportunities for every person no matter the race, background or colour. Over the years, we have observed the lack of female balance within our Technology unit. There was therefore the need to devise ways of encouraging more female participation in technology and we see this avenue as a sure way of bridging that gap. Our aim is to develop a long term relationship with the students and make effective future leaders out of them.”
