GLo struggles to stay afloat in Ghana

Glo lost the highest number of voice subscribers as compared to its peers in the month of March.

The Nigerian based mobile operator lost about 53,000 subscribers representing about 4percent of its total number of subscribers.

The development is contained in the National Communications Authority (NCA)’s monthly Mobile Voice subscription report.

Glo’s drop in subscription for the month of March makes it the 11th consecutive month that Glo has experienced declines in its market share.

Glo has since January last year lost about 265,000 subscribers and now has a market share of about 4.8percent.

The overall number of mobile voice subscribers for the month of March increased by a little over 51,000 subscribers.

The statistics shows subscriber base hit about 28.7million representing about 109 percent mobile penetration in the Ghanaian Market.

This figure exceeds the total population of the country but this is due to the prevalence of users holding more than one phone.

MTN’s subscriber base hit 13million users in March.

It gained about 68,000 subscribers representing a 5 percent increase.

Its market share increased by about 1 percent to 45 percent.

MTN was closely followed by Vodafone which recorded about 67,000 new subscribers.

Its market share increased marginally from 22.4 percent to 22.6 percent.

Its total subscriber base is now about 6.48milllion.

Airtel experienced a decrease of 1percent in its market share though it gained a little below 3,000 new subscribers in March.

With about 3.5million subscribers it holds about 12.4percent of the total market share.

Expresso, which has been banned for a month from undertaking any sales or marketing promotions due to poor quality service gained a little below 1000 subscribers.

Its subscriber base is now about 155,000 users allowing it to hold about 0.54 percent of the total market share.

Tigo could not sustain its February recovery as it lost about 35,000 subscribers in March.

This made Tigo lose about 1 percent of its market share to about 14.3%.
