Information reaching Citi News indicates that travelers who use the Volta Lake risk losing their lives making their journey on overcrowded boats following as a result of a broken down pontoon.

One person drowned while several others were injured after a ferry crossing the Afram River on the Volta Lake sunk on Saturday night.

The Ghana Maritime Authority, which is investigating the incident, says it happened as a result of overloading of the ferry.

[contextly_sidebar id=”DDYZXijvmCikELyu5rdMGvc2qGdOuDfR”]The Member of Parliament for Afraim Plain North, Emmanuel Aboagye Didiyie, who confirmed the incident to citifmonline.com, said “the ferry was carting goods from Atoaboma to Bridgeano in the Eastern Region on Saturday, when the incident occurred.”

A source who wants to remain anonymous in the Yeji area told Citi News accidents on the Volta Lake are largely due to the usage of boats since the pontoon has broken down.

The source explained that for over a week now in Yeji, the pontoon supposed to transport people, goods and passenger vehicles, has not been operating due to a fault, compelling travelers to return to the use of boats.

He said the travelers mostly make the journey to Mankago, a transit point, and then continue to the north specifically Tamale, Bolgatanga and others.
