Some students of the University of Ghana are planning on demonstrating against the school’s authorities over anomalies a new grading system has created which could potentially prevent thousands of final year students from graduating.
Under the new system, a student can only be graded A after getting 80% in an exam while the old system grades an A with 70%.
According to the students, the University’s attempt to migrate them onto the new grading system has created some problems which have affected the grades; some students will either re-write their papers or not graduate.
Final year students at the English, Economics, Political Science and Psychology department are the most affected.
Speaking to Citi News, a Course Representative for the final year students at the English Department of the University, Bright Owusu described the situation as “tragic.”
He stated the affected students are yet to conclude on the next line of action, adding that the students are planning to take an action if nothing is done about their plight.
Another student of the University, Gideon Kpodo says the problem has gotten most of the students worried.
“Generally, there are students who are worried, some are planning to boycott the examination while others are also planning to take a legal action against the University,”he said.
He however said the Students Representative Council (SRC) has promised to engage more with the University to resolve the problem.
“A committee has been set up [by the SRC ] in that regard to look into the new grading system to see the necessary changes that can be made,” he noted.
