President John Dramani Mahama has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMCEs) pursuing academic courses while in office to defer such programmes with immediate effect.
A statement issued in Accra on Thursday by Mr Collins Duada, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development asked the Regional Ministers to inform all MMDCES in their regions to strictly comply with the directive.
[contextly_sidebar id=”iiO9poLrw6O3O0IWCFKrNtQmwB0u2g2k”]A Ghana News Agency report said the statement warned the affected MMDCEs that they would “have themselves to blame” if they flout the directive.
A number of these MMDCEs including other ministers have often been accused of shirking their official duties because of their other engagements.
However, it is unclear whether their pursuit of higher education is affecting their work with the government.
A lot of the officials usually enroll in institutions like the Local Government Institute and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
Presidency strips Ministers of ‘first class’ travels
Government in December last year directed ministers who embark on official foreign travels on first class tickets to stop with immediate effect.
Government also directed all its ministers to cut down on foreign travels in a bid to curtail government spending.
The directive was issued in a letter from the office of the president and signed by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.
Government in the statement said “it is needless to emphasise the serious impact the current frequent travels abroad by Ministers and Public officials are having on government finances,” he said.
