A GHc 397,000 abandoned Tourist Receptive Centre in Kpetoe of the Volta Region was razed by fire on Monday.
The project which was awarded by the Ministry Of Tourism Culture and Creative Arts in 2010 was among the seven Tourist Receptive Centers built across the country to enhance tourism.
The components of the facility include an information area, toilet facilities, restaurants, souvenir shops, museum, reading rooms and parking area as well as lands for private sector investment.
However the Kpetoe Project, prior to the fire outbreak has been abandoned in a thick bush for several years.
A recent fire outbreak in the area, further blighted the purposes of this facility. The fire burnt down the entire roofing of the structure located on the Ho-Kpetoe Highways.
“As a citizen if that building is there, I know my district is growing up. But so far as it is burnt down now, it is very painful. I think the district, the ministry and the contractor should be taken on.”
“How can they spend about 2billion on that building and then within a twinkle of hours that building would be burnt down?” one of the residents lamented.
According to residents, the contractor, Nimonat construction limited vacated the site when the project was about 70 percent complete.
The Chief Executive of Agortime-Ziope District, Mr Micheal Kobla Adzaho said several failed attempts were made to bring the contractor back to site.
Meanwhile the Acting Chief Director of the Ministry, Edwin Owusu Mensah told Citi News work on the project has stalled mainly due to lack of funds.
Agortime is the home of the rich tradition of Kente in the Volta Region.
