President John Mahama has appealed for compassion from Ghanaians for the Guantanamo Bay detainees who will spend two years in Ghana.

Speaking on the issue for the first time, President Mahama asked Ghanaians outraged over the government’s decision to host the two, to show compassion for these men who have spent 14 years in jail without trial.

“In the Bible, it teaches us to be compassionate to prisoners, that is even persons who were convicted. These people were not even convicted.”

Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby were transferred to Ghana last week by the United States government.

Government’s acceptance has angered Ghanaians with many including the clergy asking the government to return them to the US.

But President Mahama has appealed for calm and compassion saying,” we must also look at the side of compassion.”

“…where is our Christian passion or where is our faith based compassion on people that after being detained for 14 years without trial, we can’t find it or hearts to give these people at least a chance to restart their lives.”
