Road accidents down by 17% in 2015 [infographic]

The National Road Safety Commission of Ghana has announced a 17.5% decrease in the number of reported road accidents from January to November 2015 as compared to statistics from the same period in 2014.

According to the Executive Director of the Commission, ING May Obiri-Yeboah, “From January to November 2015, a total of 9,904 cases of road traffic crashes have been reported involving 15,505 vehicles.

These crashes led to 1,938 cases of pedestrian knock downs, 1,474 deaths and 8,448 injuries.”

The commission reported that 2,074 motorbikes were involved in the total cases of road accidents recorded.

Also, of the total of 15,505 vehicles involved 6,585 were commercial vehicles while 6,846 were private vehicles. Info roads

The commission further explained that the decrease in the number of recorded accident cases was due to the work the commission and all its stakeholders over the period.

ING May Obiri-Yeboah further assured the general public that, the commission in collaboration with the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and all other stakeholders will work hard to further reduce these numbers this year.
