The Police in Nsawam have arrested a gentleman who went to pick up scrap metal at a quarry site at Piabo in Nsawam, days after the dynamite explosion.

The action of the man, the police say, is in clear violation of the law because the site has been marked as a restricted area.

Residents living close by the quarry have also been evacuated.

The Nsawam Police Commander, Superintendent Magnus Sam told Citi News the Police are keenly monitoring events.

He added that there is a man-hunt underway for the owner of the quarry site.

“One person went there for scrap after the explosion and he has been apprehended because the place is now a restricted area. No one goes there now. The owner of the place has not yet been arrested; we are now making efforts to get him.”

Meanwhile, the over one thousand people displaced as a result of the explosion have refused to re-settle at make-shift shelters created for them.

The National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, told Citi News the situation is making its work difficult as it is unable to identify victims.

The Regional Security Council’s report indicates that other explosives have been discovered on the site which makes it unsafe for residents around the area.

However, the Eastern Regional Director of NADMO, Ransford Owusu Boakye said his outfit has not provided any relief item yet because it is unable to identify victims.

He said all the victims are staying with their relatives and friends.

“We have created what we call a safe haven at the St. Martins Secondary School and then the Catholic Youth Organisation at Nsawam but they are refusing to relocate there. Almost everybody wants to be with a friend or relative and that is the problem we are having now.”

He said “we are having it very difficult having access to the victims. If you want to go with relief items you should have all these people at a particular place, either than that we have to take house numbers of the relatives and friends and then move to those areas which will make our work very difficult.”
