The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hanna Tetteh has debunked reports that about 300 Ghanaians are facing execution in Tripoli, Libya.

The media reports suggested that some Ghanaians were arrested for loitering around in town and have been sentenced to death.

But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said the report “cannot be confirmed.”

The ministry revealed this following investigations conducted by the Ghanaian Embassy in Malta which has oversight over national affairs in Libya.

“Our Embassy in Tripoli, Libya was relocated to Valletta, Malta over a year ago and it is our Embassy in Malta that conducted investigations on this matter on our behalf,” she said.

The investigations conducted revealed as follows:

  • The detention centre mentioned in the reports is under the control of the Libyan Dawn Militias which back the Tripoli Government.
  • There are four Ghanaians at the centre awaiting deportation whose cases will be followed up by the Embassy.
  • That after checking with the Courts in Tripoli it could not be confirmed in the Courts that there were 300 Ghanaians standing trial.

Hanna Tetteh  added that information derived from the investigations makes the execution reportage untrue.

“From the information currently available to me therefore, it appears the story is not true. Should any new facts emerge, or any additional information to come to our attention, I will inform the public.”
