Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, running mate to the 2016 Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, has reiterated the party’s promise to restore the scrapped allowances for trainee nurses and teachers when voted into power in 2016.

The allowance system has been eliminated with trainees now having access to the Students Loan Scheme.

According to government, the allowance had outlived its usefulness and had also curtailed enrollment which has now improved since it was scrapped.

[contextly_sidebar id=”z94l8JUga8mFI2HIr3ZF3XyRNu5q7RcY”]There had been several student protests to get the allowance restored, but government has insisted on maintaining the new policy.

But the NPP has argued the policy is not friendly and will only burden trainees. The party believes Government’s mismanagement of the country’s resources is to blame for the non-payment hence its decision to scrap it.

Speaking at the NPP’s 15th Extraordinary National Delegates Conference in the Brong Ahafo Regional capital Sunyani over the weekend, Dr. Bawumia said an NPP administration under the leadership of Nana Akufo-Addo, will deliver solutions to problems and not excuses to the people of Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia told the ecstatic crowd at the Sunyani Coronation Park, that the allowance for trainee teachers and nurses will be restored when the NPP returns to power.

“Fellow Ghanaians; it is time for change and it is time for us to build a new economy. A new day is coming; Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP are coming to deliver a government of solutions to problems and not a government of excuses. We are going to build the most people and business friendly economy in Africa. For the NPP, amongst others, we have an incorruptible leader in Nana Akufo-Addo who will govern with integrity.”

He added “we will restore fiscal discipline; we will build an economy that will create jobs for our youth;’ we will meet our statutory obligation and we will restore teacher and nursing training allowances. We will focus on skills training for our youth, and we will focus on agriculture and restore the mass cocoa spraying exercise and make sure famers have access to fertilizer and we will transform the economy to add value to our raw materials for export.”
