The Member of Parliament for the Damongo constituency, Mutawaikilu Adam, says Parliament did an efficient job with the deal between Ghana and AMERI Power.
He made the statement in an interview with Richard Dela Sky on Eyewitness News.
[contextly_sidebar id=”AxskBRnGWlpfwcjzwDhNceWJnwQ8EY5C”]This comes on the back of reports from Norwegian newspaper VG, that a witness to the agreement signed between the government of Ghana and AMERI Power, is wanted by Interpol for financial crimes in Norway and Switzerland.
The newspaper claimed that Ghana may have been short-changed in the deal because of a possible inflation of the price.
The story said Ghana is paying $510 million for ten power turbines when the market value of the turbines is $220 million.
The issue has raised a public outcry while many are criticizing Parliament for doing a shoddy job on the deal.
But according to Mr. Adam, Members of Parliament did not disagree on anything when the document on the deal was laid before it because they believe it was transparent.
“Parliament did a very efficient job when the agreement was laid before us. When the agreement was referred to the Select Committee on Mines and Energy, we did all we could to arrive at our conclusion. There was no disagreement between NPP and NDC members on the committee,” he said.
He further explained that “before the agreement came, ACEP said that it would cost Ghana 700 million dollars and that they believe it was inflated. When we met the Minister for Power and the CEO of the company in question, the first thing that came up was what the options available to us were. The first was cash, which was impossible and the second was borrowing, the third was on a rental basis.”
Mutawaikilu Adam says he considers the deal between government and AMERI group to have value for money.
Meanwhile some MPs have admitted the deal was rushed through Parliament.
