National Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has been appointed acting General Secretary of the party following the indefinite suspension of the party’s General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

Mr. Agyepong was suspended by the National Executive Committee (NEC) after a crucial meeting on Thursday December 10.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ASQK96i8UseMpmaqsH0lksyef5QV0Ggg”]NPP’s Communication Director Nana Akomea announced at a news conference Thursday that Mr. John Boadu will hold the General Secretary position as an additional responsibility until the next congress.

Nana Akomea explained that the embattled General Secretary violated Article 3(d) of the party’s constitution that enjoins officers to uphold the decisions of the party.

Mr. Agyepong, by his posture, is also perceived to have supported Mr. Paul Afoko, an action considered as an affront to the regulations of the party.

Among other things, he publicly rejected the party’s decision to suspend Mr. Paul Afoko.

The party’s Disciplinary Committee had asked that Mr. Agyepong be given a 15-month suspension, while Mr. Sammy Crabbe, the party’s Second Vice Chairman, was to be suspended indefinitely.

But the NEC decided to suspend both of them indefinitely. Mr. Crabbe, who is seen as an ally to the suspended National Chairman, Paul Afoko, refused to appear before the committee after several invitations.

Some members of the party mostly women, stormed the headquarters to pop Champagne to celebrate the NEC’s decision.

Mr. Agyepong, who was present at the meeting that suspended him, and Sammy Crabbe, will now join Paul Afoko as national officers who have been suspended by the party in less than two months.

Some political observers had warned that sidelining such figures will deepen the party’s internal strife, but others disagree.

Mr. Paul Afoko, is already contending his suspension in court since he claims it’s in breach of the party’s constitution.

It is unclear yet what the reactions of Mr. Agyepong and Sammy Crabbe would be as the two are yet to comment publicly on the matter.

John Boadu was once a National Youth Organizer of the NPP, before he became a part of the party’s research team. He was later elected the party’s National Organizer at its last congress in Tamale, and now his recent additional role as acting General Secretary.
