The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) says the scrapping of the Teachers’ motivation allowance will affect some of its members.

The motivation allowance was levied on students at the secondary school level but from next term, government will remove the levy from their fees.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hgJIrZ9NYv6DmVB4fiW0EVQvy4oBkK6X”]While admitting that the allowance is not part of their conditions of service, the acting General Secretary of GNAT, Veni Demanya believes the move may demotivate some teachers.

Speaking to Citi News, he said the decision to scrap the allowance “will affect those who are receiving it in that their expectations will not be met.”

He however acknowledged that the motivation allowance was not part of their conditions of service but were  mere agreements with the Ghana Education Service (GES).

“It is not part of our conditions of service and therefore if they are saying they are scrapping it, I know that these are agreements by GES to motivate the teachers to put in more for their pupils.”

The Government announced it had scrapped the ‘teacher motivation allowance’ paid to members of the profession each term with the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Francis Gbadago, saying the motivation allowance had outlived its usefulness.
