Samsung has agreed to settle for USD 548 million a 2011 smartphone patent suit in which Apple claimed USD 2.5 billion in damages, according to a joint statement filed to the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

Apple won the case in 2012, but was awarded only around USD 1 billion. In making the payment, Samsung is complying with a partial judgement handed down in September in Apple’s favour.

In an e-mail to the New York Times, Samsung said, “We are disappointed that the court has agreed to proceed with Apple’s grossly exaggerated claims regardless of whether the patents are valid. While we’ve agreed to pay Apple, we remain buy cialis confident that our products do not infringe on Apple’s design patents, and we will continue to take all appropriate measures within the legal system to protect our products and our intellectual property.”

The company wants to be able to reclaim some or all of the payment if the partial judgement is set aside on appeal to the Supreme Court or it is reversed.

Apple disputed Samsung’s claim to a right to be reimbursed and reiterated that the ruling “reinforces what courts around the world have already found: that Samsung wilfully stole our ideas and copied our products.” Another lawsuit is still outstanding.
