$87 million Job 600 leaks badly, elevators break down

Two out of the six elevators of the newly refurbished Job 600 office complex have broken down, less than one month after the complex was inaugurated.

The security scanners are also out of order, a situation that has resulted in security personnel at the entrances conducting manual body searches.

[contextly_sidebar id=”1GBwXYMhEFacFVXNDMkZymRqOe3LNxZ4″]Investigations conducted by the Daily Graphic have revealed that some parts of the roof of the complex are also leaking and, therefore  anytime it rains, water from the roof seeps into the electric motors which drive the traction cables and the counterweight systems of the elevators this rendering them incapable of operating.

The scanners broke down a few weeks after the inauguration.

Security men at the complex confirmed the findings but declined further comments.

The complex was rehabilitated and refurbished by the China state Hualong Construction Company Ltd.

It was inaugurated on November 7, this year by President John Mahama.

Apart from offices for more than 240 Members of Parliament, the complex has a 300-seater auditorium, a gymnasium, banking halls, an MPs dining room and an ICT centre.

Job 600 was built by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s government for the 1965 Organisation of African Unity (OAU) conference. No maintenance schedule was planned for the complex after his overthrow.

In 2007, President John Agyekum Kufuor’s government secured a US$24 million loan to rehabilitate the structure for it to be used by the MPs but the project did not take off until Prof. Evans Atta Mills assumed office, by which time the cost had increased to US$63million.

After the money was expended, an additional US$24 million was released by the government to cover furnishing and other costs.
