A Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Forestry, Albert Abongo, has condemned a demonstration by students of the Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping over what they say claim is an illegal sale of their land to a private developer.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SG6MZohwWAPjZac2YJqD4JTsWbQP0Rje”]The students have so far embarked on two separate demonstrations and have petitioned Parliament on the intended sale.

Allegations are that the land has been sold to some foreign investors to build a shopping mall but the students argue that the Lands Commission failed to consult them before taking the decision.

They also claim that efforts have not been made to accommodate them elsewhere should the land be sold hence their protest. But the MP, who described the Lands Commission’s move as a good initiative, refuted such claims ,  saying the Commission will accommodate them [students] in one of its facilities after they are relocated.

“I believe that it is quite a good idea and I know the Lands Commission is making an alternative arrangement for the school to be located in one of their facilities around Elwak area; so I don’t know what their problem really is. If you look at that area, is quite a vast land and the Lands Commission is proposing to have a one-stop centre for all land issues and that is a very good idea,” he explained.
