A study by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ghana and the Ghana Health Service, has revealed that 1,352 new cases of fistula are recorded annually in the country.

An obstetric fistula is a hole between the vagina and rectum or bladder that is caused by prolonged obstructed labour, thereby leaving a woman with no control over urination or defecation or both.
