The Ghana Union of Professional Students joined students of the Ghana School of Land Survey and Marking in the Greater Accra Region, to demonstrate over what they say are attempts by the Lands Commission to illegally sell their lands.
They were seen holding placards with inscriptions such as “Is selling school lands the better Ghana agenda?”, “Future surveyors in crisis”, “Oh Mahama; is this part of the free education”amongst others.
The ongoing demonstration kicked off from the Obra Spot at Circle and will end at Parliament where the protesters are seeking to present a petition to the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho.
The students argue that the Lands Commission failed to consult them on the purported sale of the land to a private investor, seeking to construct a shopping mall. They also claim that efforts have not been made to accommodate properly should the land be sold hence their protest.
This is the second time that students are protesting against the attempted sale. The students’ protest comes barely a week after the authorities of the La Traditional area also stormed the school, to warn the Lands Commission against selling the land.
Officials of the Lands Commission are yet to comment on the development.
