The Brong Ahafo Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Opoku Atuahene, is hopeful his region will secure 19 parliamentary seats for the NDC in the 2016 general elections and increase the number of votes for President Mahama.
[contextly_sidebar id=”OOt5l34i6fAbZeUi3NidFYyLB7612A9Y”]Speaking to Citi News, Opoku Atuahene highlighted the fact that the party has gained grounds in some keys areas in the region and currently holds 16 parliamentary seats.
The party also had over 50 percent of the total votes from the region in the 2012 elections.
He stated his region is targeting 53 percent of the Brong Ahafo region’s total votes for president Mahama – a near 2 percent increase in his 51.49 percent total in the 2012 elections.
“In 2012, we were able to secure 16 seats. In 2016 we are expecting 19 of the seats.”
“The presidential, we had a little over 51 percent and we are targeting 53 this time round,” he added.
Atuahene called these targets “modest and reasonable” and reachable with “little effort”.
The projections made by the regional chairman are modest in comparison to the Sunyani Chief’s assurance of securing President Mahama and the NDC 80 percent of the total votes from the region.
Atuahene went on to emphasize that the NDC is still the most popular party in the region and added the party was working hard on the ground.
“We will maximize our operations there in terms of better educating the people to understand the party policies. We are not just talking, we are on the ground … you can do you checks and you will see that the NDC is still, at the moment, the most popular political party in the region.”
