The ongoing global campaign to end violence against women and children which was launched on Wednesday, has been greeted with impunity in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, after a 28-year-old Monica Kabenla and her husband, whose name was only given as Emma, whipped their 8 year-old niece with hot machete.

The victim, Rose Quesi Ebah, an orphan, was allegedly whipped for returning home late after accompanying a neighbour to the farm.

A resident, Lydia Mensah, who drew the attention of the Police upon hearing the story, told Citi News that the couple claimed they disciplined the child because they did not understand why she came home late.

[contextly_sidebar id=”JRZ6VLGHBigbnBgMZZ2NSW5LfGafkgVR”]According to Lydia Mensah, the wife tied the hands of Rose, a school drop out, allowing the husband to whip her from behind with the hot machete.

Lydia Mensah said she reported the matter to the Esiama District Police Command which led to the arrest of the couple.

Meanwhile, Monica Kabenla, who allegedly attempted to commit suicide while at the Police Station, has been put under strict surveillance.

The 8-year-old  with multiple deep cuts on her back and legs, is responding to treatment at the Essiama Community Health Center.

The Police say they may send Rose Quesi Ebah, an orphan, to the Social Welfare.
