The Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament, Dominic Nitiwul, has asked President John Mahama to apologize to minority members for ‘insulting’ them.

President Mahama while addressing some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region, suggested that, if minority members have been sleeping on the job hence their criticism of government loans which were discussed and approved by the house.

[contextly_sidebar id=”r25yPAL79I3qINrMSPrXwn0JkRFGhPGL”]Speaking to Citi News, Dominic Nitiwul noted that “it was not a wise thing for anybody to insult members of parliament particularly the minority” and called for an apology form the president saying, “he [ Mahama] knows what to do. He should withdraw it immediately and apologize to the people who voted for us because I did not come here on my own.” “I am not sleeping. Neither are any of the minority MPs sleeping,” he added.

Dominic Nitiwul further expressed displeasure with the President’s comments saying the minority were “hurt” and “betrayed.”

”It’s clear that the minority are not happy with the President’s comments. They feel hurt. They feel betrayed…Betrayed because for the past one month that the majority members have been working in their constituencies and are not in parliament. It is the minority that passes bills,  loans, work in government, correct things that they bring, do winnowing of bills and for anybody to insinuate, to even say, that the minority are not working, they are sleeping in parliament is very very unfortunate.”

A former Deputy Majority Chief Whip in Ghana’s Parliament, Sampson Ahi, had accused the Minority of sabotaging government business.

He alleged that the minority, by their actions, are only trying to get back at President John Mahama for accusing them of sleeping on the job.

But responding to these accusations, Nitiwul dismissed his claims, saying “MPs are not kids”.

“We have always worked in the interest of the people of Ghana. In our work, the first beneficiary is the President because that is his government.”
