The New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region have questioned the rationale behind the President’s promise of providing free shoes for basic school children in the country.
The executives have also questioned how the president’s latest promise was going to be fulfilled when his administration was yet to fulfill majority of its campaign promises to Ghanaians.
“We were surprised the president came promising shoes for all school children when little has been seen of the 100 community schools he promised this year”, the Ashanti Regional NPP Secretary Samuel Pyne said when he addressed a press conference in Kumasi on Tuesday.
President John Mahama during a familiarization tour to the Defense Industry Holding Company; a shoe Factory owned by the Ghana Armed Forces as part of his three-day working visit to the Ashanti Region, announced that, shoes to be manufactured by the factory will be distributed for free to all school going children in the country.
He subsequently directed the Education Ministry, the Trade and Industry Ministry and the Local Government Ministry to ensure the programme commences soon.
However, Samuel Pyne has called on Ghanaians to disregard the government’s promises.
Meanwhile, government has stated it will soon reveal how much it will cost the country to produce the free school shoes.
Director of Communications at the Presidency, Ben Dotse Malor has told Citi News, even though the cost of the exercise is unknown yet; government is committed to ensuring its fulfillment.
