A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Ransford Gyampoh is advocating clear timelines for electioneering campaigns in the country.
Campaigning for the next elections seems to have picked up in earnest one year to the elections.
Both President John Mahama and his main challenger, the New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akuffo Addo have embarked on nationwide tours campaigning for votes.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Dr Gyampoh said political parties in government would be compelled to govern if there are clear timelines to campaign.
He observed that “in our part of the world, campaigns begin the moment elections are held and a president is sworn in. That marks the beginning of campaigning and you can see that the moment people are elected they will tell you quickly that they are interested in the next coming election again. They do so many things that puts them in that perpetual campaigning mode.”
“As a nation I believe that we should have a season where we can say it’s our campaign season, that will come after leaders have tried as much as they can to deliver on the promises that they may have made to the people. So we should have a particular time that we can do campaigning. Something can be worked out as a nation. We should know that we cannot always be in campaigning mode,” he opined.
