The University of Ghana has put a temporary freeze on the recruitment of new staff.

This was revealed by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, at the November 2015 congregation of the University of Ghana.

[contextly_sidebar id=”JKgEKlZj2K9MCu0ZucPtQI3wVuRIjI8O”]According to Professor Aryeetey, the freeze is because the institution has not received  clearance from government to make new appointments.

“Management has been forced to put a temporary freeze on all employment until such time that the University of Ghana receives financial clearance from government on the appointment of staff.”

He explained that even though some employees of the University of Ghana “retired at the end of the last academic year, no new appointments are being made that require payment by government.”

This, he said, “has become a major obstacle to the development of academic programmes.”

There has been  a freeze on employment in most public institutions since Ghana commenced a three-year programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as government seeks to control expenditure on public sector wages.
