The presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo has cautioned members of the party in the Asawase constituency against staging any reprisal attacks following the death of Abubakar Sadiq.

Nana Addo, addressing supporters of the party in the Ashanti Regional constituency on Friday, stated that Sadiq’s death should be seen as a “sacrifice” which should spur the NPP to resolving its issues and reclaiming power in 2016.

[contextly_sidebar id=”vkxbLPAKmLBlpmUo9xxVLy2haUxDqdfG”]”I take this opportunity to plead with all NPP members that we do not want any further bloodshed in the party. Let’s all understand that Abubakar Sadiq’s death is a sacrifice for all to end violence in the party,” Nana Addo said.

His comments were made after the the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for the Asawase constituency, Muntaka Mubarak predicted reprisal attacks in the area if those who killed the NPP member are not dealt with.

Abubakar Sadiq, an NPP activist was stabbed to death for allegedly threatening to beat up the constituency chairman who is reported to have made some unpleasant comments about the party’s flagbearer, Nana Akuffo Addo.

The constituency chairman, Mr. Brenya and six others, believed to have been behind the attack have been remanded as police investigations proceed.

Though the police have not concluded their investigation into the incident, Sadiq’s death is believed to be in connection with his alleged threats to beat up the constituency chairman.

Nana Addo,  in his speech to the supporters of the party, added that any form of retaliation which leads to more bloodshed would be contrary to the party’s democratic credentials.

“Nobody should think about retaliating the death that has occurred. That will not help us. Bloodshed and violence are not part of the democratic dispensation which the NPP has been instrumental in instituting in Ghana,” he said.
