The University for Development Studies (UDS) continues to produce medical Doctors to improve the nation’s insufficient Doctor-Patient ratio.
Sixteen fresh Doctors on Friday graduated from the university’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Dean of the UDS School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Professor Francis Abantanga advised the fresh Doctors to desist from participating in ‘needless’ strikes over their conditions of service.
He also implored them to stay in the country and save lives rather than going abroad to seek greener pastures.
Professor Abantanga boasted that the fresh Doctors were fully equipped to discharge their duties.
The UDS Vice Chancellor, Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye tasked the fresh Doctors to accept postings to deprived communities especially in Northern Ghana.
He reminded them of the need to be disciplined at their workplaces by respecting the rights of patients.
“Let your training not be seen as useless since the university is vouching for the knowledge you have acquired and your characters.”
“The challenges in the world are enormous and also are the written rules but we are sure the training you have been given will make you stand the best of time. Prove everyone who doubts your capabilities wrong by what and how you do your work and you would be accepted by all,” Professor Teye stated.
He thanked the university’s donors and collaborators for supporting the SMHS faculty.
He explained the school’s modus operandi, “The school has adopted the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach which is student-centred and based given a problem which the students research into finding solutions themselves while they are being guided by their Tutors.”
He cited inadequate staff as one of the major problems affecting the SHMS.
“Adequate staff to handle students in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences has been like a mirage and always creates that imbalance when it comes to student-staff ratio: with the restriction on employment, staffing has been and is a real challenge.”
Professor Teye appealed to government to lift the embargo on employment in the university.
“Part time lecturers and contract lecturers are being used in partial fulfillment of this staffing problem: this is an interim and short-gap measure and we are appealing for a concession to employ more lecturers to solve this problem.”
Chairman of the Medical and Dental Council (MDC), Dr. Eric Asamoa administered the Hippocratic Oath.
He charged the fresh Doctors to be committed to their functions in line with the professional ethics.
He underscored the need for them to be mindful of saving lives and not to destroy lives out of negligence.
Two of the MDC members including a former Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ken Sagoe advised the fresh Doctors to constantly consult their senior colleagues and Nurses in the wards.
Some parents and Guardians were happy that their investments yielded a positive result.
Awards were given to deserving awardees who excelled in the various disciplines on the academic calendar.
