President John Mahama has appointed COP John Kudalor as acting Inspector General of Police.

This is to allow the current IGP, Mohammed Alhassan, to begin his accumulated leave prior to retirement.

The President, as per the Constitution, appoints the IGP in consultation with the Vice President who chairs the Police Council.

Mohammed Alhassan has been occupying the position for two years now.

He took over from former IGP, Paul Tawiah Quaye in 2013.

Mr. Felix Sarpong, Deputy Director Operations of the Ghana Immigration Service, has also been appointed to act as Director of Immigration.

Initiatives introduced during Mohammed Alhassan’s tenure

  • Police visibility unit
  • The establishment of a Police Command and Staff College which is aimed at building the capacity of personnel at Winneba in the Central Region
  • The transformation of the Armoured Car Squadon or the action troppers of the Police Service to the Formed Police Unit to react swiftly to operations
  • The reactivation of the Marine Unit which was disbanded

Despite these achievements, it was under his tenure that one of the biggest recruitment scam hit the service.

As part of investigations, the Director of Operations of the police service, COP Patrick Timbilla was implicated in the scandal.
