Suspended Founding Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey says he does not believe in the party’s ideology.

He argues that he believes in socialism but only joined the NPP in 1992 upon the recommendation of his Uncle, Victor Owusu.

“I was elected the first African President of the Students Union in the UK and I stood on the broad left ticket, a socialist ticket… My uncle Mr. Victor Owusu called me and said one of his friends had came to see him and wanted me to be a parliamentary candidate and I said fine, if I was joining politics in Ghana on ideology, I would have joined the CPP or the NDC… ”

Talking about the NPP’s ideology which in his perspective was not the best for the party , he said: ” I did not believe that in a country where  90 percent of people were looking for basic needs, you could push the self actualisation needs on my ideology is this and my ideology is that.”

He made these comments on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana on Thursday.

Dr. Brobby was suspended by the NPP in 2013 over accusations of bringing the name of the party into disrepute when he publicly spoke against the party’s decision to go to court over the results of the 2012 elections.

He is said to have made derogatory remarks about the party’s decision to publicly challenge the outcome of the 2012 presidential election at the Supreme Court.

He was also barred from making disparaging remarks about the party.

The punishment was meted out after the party’s National Executive Committee received a report from its Disciplinary Committee.
