Davis Opoku Ansah, an aide to the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has explained why his boss did not attend Tuesday’s crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Mr. Agyepong, who is believed to be an ally of the suspended National Chairman Paul Afoko, did not attend the meeting despite receiving an invitation from acting Chairman, Freddie Blay.
[contextly_sidebar id=”KhNUQYFhtfyc0GrR7ZjvT5Vm6SLkQokT”]Speaking to Citi News, Kwabena Agyepong’s Special Assistant, Davis Opoku Ansah, said his boss stayed off the meeting because of a court injunction restricting the party from holding meetings.
Davis Opoku Ansah expressed surprise at critics questioning why Mr. Agyepong was not present at the meeting.
“We are a bit surprised that people will be reading meanings into his absence at a meeting which he had clearly indicated that he had received some court summons and he would not want to be part until the final determination of the matter in court.”
Mr. Opoku Ansah argued that his boss is still executing his duties as expected of a General Secretary.
“He has sought legal advice and it is clear that he cannot be part of that meeting until the court has sat on the matter and given its ruling to say that we can go ahead or not. But he remains the General Secretary and he is working and I think that is what matters,” Davis Opoku Ansah added.
Meanwhile, the Communications Director of the NPP, Nana Akomea said as far as they are concerned, the party has not been restrained by any court order from holding meetings.
“All of us know that if you want a pronouncement of what is legal and what is not, you go to the court, you don’t issue a statement pronouncing an illegality and legality. So if some party members thought there was some illegality going on in the party, they can appeal to the National Council or go to the court. So if people have chosen to go to the court, they should wait for the court to decide. As we speak, there is no restraining order against the party from holding any meeting.”
Mr. Kwabena Agyepong was recently attacked and the windscreen of his car damaged, after he informed executives of the party about the pending lawsuit against the suspension of Mr. Paul Afoko at a steering committee meeting at the party’s headquarters.
Mr. Afoko was suspended by the NPP for misconduct after two members petitioned the leadership of the party.
