The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is asking its members to support its decision to suspend the party’s chairman, Paul Afoko.

The NEC and the National Council held separate meetings on Tuesday to among other  things; affirm their support for NPP’s acting chairman, Freddie Blay.

Freddie Blay was appointed as the acting Chairman after Afoko was suspended.

“The meeting also re-affirmed the position of the acting chairman, Mr. Blay. The National Council was not seized of the matter because they are an appellate body and there may be an appeal to them but that didn’t come before the National Council so the National Executive Committee re-affirmed its decision for Mr. Blay to act as the acting National Chairman.”

“The meeting also admonished all party supporters across the country to stick and uphold the decisions of the party and that the party will do what is best for everybody in the party.”

Nana Akomea also revealed that the party’s General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong was not present at the meeting adding that “no official reason was given for his absence.”

He said “out of the about 120 members, about 90 people attended. But nobody gave a reason why the General Secretary was not present.”

Prior to the meeting, Paul Afoko had issued a statement describing the meeting as illegal and urged all party members not to attend.

“The attention of the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Paul Afoko has been drawn to yet another illegal NEC meeting being called by the First Vice Chairman, Mr. Freddie Blay.Mr. Afoko wishes to state that he has not called any meeting neither has the General Secretary, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong issued notice inviting members to attend any meeting,” the statement noted.
