The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is holding its first meeting since the suspension of National Chairman, Paul Afoko.
This is in spite of a statement issued by Mr. Afoko asking members of the NEC to ignore the meeting being organized by the party’s acting Chairman, Freddie Blay.
The statement, which was issued on behalf of Afoko and signed by his Spokesperson, Nana Yaw Osei described the purported meeting as ‘illegal.”
[contextly_sidebar id=”mSU65r3syfwek0Ui0wjoI8ZLeq3olbsp”]Citi News’ Sammy Wiafe, who is at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down reports the meeting amongst others, is expected to review the Electoral Commission’s forum on proposals for a new voters’ register.
He reports that the Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is also expected to participate in the meeting together with Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul.
He says some members of parliament and various regional chairmen have also arrived for the meeting.
Conspicuously missing at the meeting is the party’s General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.
It is unclear why Mr. Agyepong is not at the meeting, but during a recent steering committee meeting at the party’s office, Mr. Agyepong had the windscreen of his car vandalized.
This was after he had gone into the meeting to notify the executives of a summons he had received following a suit challenging Mr. Afoko’s suspension.
Among the declarations being sought, the plaintiffs are asking the court to nullify the suspension of Mr. Afoko and also stop Mr. Freddie Blay from holding himself as acting chairman.
They are also asking the court to stop the party from holding any meetings such as the one which is ongoing today.
According to lawyer for the plaintiffs, although the hearing of their suit scheduled for November 9 is still pending, any meeting held by the party will be illegal.
