The Founder and Leader of the yet-to-be certified Ghana National Freedom Party (GFP) Madam Akua Donkor, has stated emphatically that the opposition New Patriotic Party’s demand for a new voters’ register for election 2016, will not be granted.

Delivering her party’s position on the voters’ register at the Electoral Commission forum, Madam Akua Donkor, said there is nothing wrong with the current voters’ register.

According to her, minors who found their names on the register, mostly do not vote but rather use the card for other purposes and so that should not be a bother.

She also criticized the decision of the NPP to engage the United States in the ongoing debate on the voters’ register, insisting the US cannot interfere in the affairs of Ghana as a sovereign state.

“There is nothing wrong with the old register; and the reason I am saying this is that, I went to the USA for three weeks to galvanize support for my party, but because the EC was demanding proposals for the debate on the new voters’ register, I cut short my trip to return to forward my proposals.

Madam Akua Donkor, who is largely viewed as an uneducated politician only good for comedy, could hardly communicate her thoughts clearly on the voters’ register debate, forcing laughter from the participants.

Moderators of the forum had to call participants in the auditorium to order.

Madam Akua Donkor pleaded with Ghanaians not to put undue pressure on the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, who is the first woman to head the institution.

The opposition New Patriotic Party has been leading the campaign for a new register as it claims the existing one is bloated with names of foreigners and minors.

They have since petitioned the EC, which called for proposals from all political parties and civil society organizations.

The 2-day forum ends on Friday after which the EC will receive recommendations from the 5-member panel and take a final decision on the matter.
