The Ministry of Transport has confirmed the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) will be further divided into two entities, a Civil Aviation Authority an independent regulator as well as an Air Navigation Authority provider (ANSP).
[contextly_sidebar id=”fjXeiaMDgeluL8Fm7jAOTn64ENjpKlQw”]This follows the endorsement for the creation of an Independent Civil Aviation Authority after the 2012 Abuja Declaration of Africa flight safety summit.
This was attended by the Africa Transport Ministers and subsequently approved by the African Union (AU).
In 2006 the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) was first decoupled to create the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) as the airport service provider and the Civil Aviation Authority as the regulator.
Delivering the keynote address at the International federation of Air Traffic controllers Association regional meeting in Accra, the deputy minister of transport Joyce Mogtari said the move will allow the entities focus on their key functions.
She said as best industry practice require , this will enable the new GCAA to focus on its main function of providing oversight responsibilities over the Airport service Provider(GACL) and Air Navigation Service Provider(ANSP) .
“The ceding of the airports management functions from the then GCAA to GACL actually facilitated GACL to focus on the consistent improvements of airport infrastructural developments in the country” she stated.
It is expected that the new ANSP will in turn focus on the development of Air traffic Management (ATM) infrastructure as well as airspace concept development to ensure safety of flights in the Accra Flight Information region(FIR) in particular and Africa as a whole.
