Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings says she did not found the National Democratic Party (NDP), a breakaway party from the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the lead up to the 2012 elections.
The former First Lady made the rather startling revelation in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM Tuesday, but failed to mention who the founder or founders were.
The wife of former President Rawlings has been largely credited with the formation of the party after criticizing the performance of the then NDC administration under the Late President John Evans Atta Mills.
In the view of the former First Lady, the tenets on which the NDC was built which included probity and accountability, had been discarded and replaced with corruption and non-performance hence her decision to leave the party.
This was at a time when her husband, the former President Rawlings, had also been an adamant critic of the NDC.
Mrs. Agyemang Rawlings told Accra-based Joy FM she had only heard of the formation of the party while outside the country and decided to join because she believed in their ideals.
“I did not found it [NDP]…I had traveled so upon my return I heard of a new party and they gave the reasons for its formation so I decided to be part of it. It sounded good because they were going to do things differently on how Ghana should go. The party had better objectives to lift Ghana from poverty to a real middle income status not by words but by deeds and I wanted to be part of it”.
Nana Konadu as Flagbearer of the party could not realize her dream of contesting the 2012 elections because according to the Electoral Commission the processing of her presidential forms had not been fully completed.
Not even an attempt to get the court to overturn the decision of the Electoral Commission proved successful.
