778 teachers in the North Tongu District in the Volta Region have been taken through a two day capacity building training program to help them improve on their productivity in schools and knowledge on financial management.

The program, organised by the Gilead consult, a management consultancy firm in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service brought together allied agencies including Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAG) and the Teachers Mutual Fund.

Apart from the teachers who were the main target, some health workers in the area also benefitted from the workshop.

Speaking at the opening ceremony at Battor, the Deputy Minister of Education and MP for the area, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed worry over the dwindling academic performance in the area despite numerous initiatives he personally spearheaded as the MP to improve academic performance of schools in the area.

He however commended Gilead Consult for such a timely program to help assuage the challenge.

The Managing Consultant of Gilead Consult, Rockson Afetsrom added that the training program will deal with several issues including financial planning while in active service, how to prepare for a financially independent retirement, work ethics and productivity improvement in the GES, the new Pension Law and how it affects teachers, how deductions are effected through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, how to get illegitimate controller deductions on pay slips stopped.

He encouraged participants to regularly visit the website organization’s website for information on handling financial issues.

The second phase of the training is scheduled to be held at Juapong in subsequent weeks.
