President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, an avowed supporter of indicted Fifa President, Sepp Blatter, has hailed the organisation for provisionally suspending him.

Mr. Nyantakyi says FIFA deserves commendation for provisionally suspending Sepp Blatter, Fifa General Secretary Jerome Valcke and UEFA President Michel Platini over allegations of impropriety.

Members of Fifa’s ethics committee met this week after the Swiss attorney general opened criminal proceedings against Blatter, 79, last month.

[contextly_sidebar id=”53MZ7wPSLnpvhVnEV7lokitlqnSPwP5n”]He is accused of signing a contract “unfavorable” to football’s governing body and making a “disloyal payment” to Uefa president Michel Platini, 60.

Swiss Blatter, who has run Fifa since 1998, and Platini, who wants to succeed him, deny any wrongdoing.

In an exclusive interview with Citi News however, Kwesi Nyantakyi said the decision to suspend the three came to him as a shock.

“It’s a big shock to all of us; I am surprised that these events like this are unfolding in Fifa and it doesn’t portend well for the image of the organization. But anything that happens happens for a good reason and so we have to welcome it and hope that if they are checking wrongdoing then the appropriate sanctions would have to be applied” he stated.

“I think that Fifa must be commended rather than condemned in these current circumstances because Fifa is taking the bull by the horn by trying to address the concern and with any scintilla of evidence against anybody, I don’t think the person will be spared.

According to him, for Fifa as an organization to deplore its internal mechanisms to crack the whip on its topmost executive, is “commendable and unprecedented”.

The GFA President believes the suspension impacts negatively on Michel Platini’s chances of contesting the FIFA Presidency.

“I think it’s going to have the effect of disqualifying those who have ambitions of contesting the position of Fifa President and in this case it is Michel Platini. It is going to make it difficult for him to become a candidate for the upcoming elections”.

Meanwhile Cameroon’s Issa Hayatou has been named as the acting Fifa president, making him the first African to lead world football’s governing body.
