The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has commended Ghanaian workers for their enormous contributions to the development of the country.

A statement signed by Reverend Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, General Secretary of CCG said: “May Day is a moment where we celebrate and appreciate workers from all sectors of our economy for their commitment, patriotism and efforts in developing our nation.

It also provides an opportunity for workers to air their views and challenges confronting them for redress.”

The statement called on all workers to develop innovative ways of promoting sound work ethics.

“As we celebrate this year’s May Day, the Council entreats Ghanaian workers, and employers in general, to develop innovative ways of promoting sound work ethics at the work place. We are of the conviction that, promotion of sound work ethic is one of the surest ways of enhancing productivity,” it said.

It also urged employers to use the celebration to reflect on the needs of their employers, and take the necessary steps to improve their conditions of service to meet the current economic situation in the country.

The statement celebrated entrepreneurs who have excelled in their various fields of work saying, “as we celebrate workers, it is also important to celebrate indigenous entrepreneurs for their tremendous efforts in the provision of employment and support to the industrial growth of this country.”

It, however, called on government to provide the necessary incentives and support, such as tax exemptions, to cushion indigenous entrepreneurs to enable them compete with foreign companies, create better job opportunities, and also become viable in contributing to the growth of the economy.

“As we look forward to dealing with the challenges of our economy and the future, we urge government, employers, and the unions, to continue to work closely together towards our common objective of better workers, better jobs and better conditions of service, so as to create  better lives for Ghanaians” it added.
