The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu has given the Fair Wages and Salary Commission a twenty-four hour ultimatum to update the ministry on the progress of negotiations with members of the National Association of Graduate Teachers(NAGRAT).
Government has demonstrated its commitment to pay all outstanding arrears owed members of NAGRAT and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers(CCT) after it engaged the two groups in a crunch meeting.
[contextly_sidebar id=”4RzBlqOPpIfLocmFb32scOSR2NUpxlre”]NAGRAT has hinted of a possible strike next week if government fails to pay annual incremental allowances due them.
This is despite the receipt of cheques by GES to pay, transfer grants and vehicle maintenance allowance to the teacher unions today.
The Minister gave the directive when he addressed the media at a meet the press series in Accra on Wednesday,
“In law, the FWSC is responsible for negotiations and not the ministry of employment and labour, mine is to facilitate and do that on behalf of the government, the institutions of this country must work… the FWSC therefore has 24 hours to make known the status of negotiations with NAGRAT,” he said.
The Minister who promised that the Ministry will meet the demands of the teachers within the stipulated period further implored on them to reconsider their decision,
“I will rather cautiously advice NAGRAT to hasten slowly with their intended strike action since the ministry is working to oblige itself of the commitments at the last meeting with the CEO of the FWSC,” he added.
