The Chairman of the Commission investigating past judgment debt payments in Ghana, Justice Yaw Apau, has said politicians must desist from interfering in the award and execution of government projects in the country.

Speaking at Tuesday’s sitting of the Commission, the Appeals Court Judge said needless political interferences have over the years impacted negatively on the quality of work done by some contractors.

To back his comments, Justice Yaw Apau said many public roads constructed recently are now in deplorable states because politicians, instead of technocrats, had been exceedingly involved in the award and execution of the contracts covering such projects.

He said, “Why do we have to wait for events before we start filing all pot holes on our roads? That’s why I say politicians should leave technocrats to do their work; there shouldn’t be any interference so that our roads can be properly constructed to reduce the deterioration. But if you want politicians to get overly involved then this is what you get; bad roads.”

Justice Apau was speaking when officials of the Department of Urban roads appeared before the commission and presented documents covering previous government contracts with Construction Pioneers, a construction firm.
