Football’s world governing body FIFA has announced that the 2022 World Cup, set to be held in Qatar, will begin on November 21 with the final scheduled for December 18.

The confirmation of the dates for the finals means that this will be the first time the World Cup will be held in the winter, having previously been played in the summer months of June and July.

The 28 days in which the tournament is set to be held will be the shortest in the history of the World Cup.

The shortest recorded tournament was played over 31 days while the last World Cup hosted by Brazil and won by Germany ended after 32 days.

There have been several arguments against staging the world cup in Qatar, with several individuals stating that the country despite knowing of the problems with the searing heat in June, had bid to host a summer tournament.

Others have also called the bidding process into question suggesting that it was not transparent.

A FIFA investigation was launched into the process while bidding for the 2026 tournament has been put on hold.
