National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has charged the Ghana’s politicians to rededicate themselves to nation building, rather than act in ways that deepen public perception that politicians are corrupt.
Paul Afoko was addressing a large gathering of mourners at the final funeral rites of the late Roland Issifu Alhassan, a founding father of the NPP.
Mr. Afoko challenged politicians to be honest and conduct themselves in ways that correct public perception that people go into politics to amass wealth at the expense of the suffering masses.
Mr. Afoko said, “The late lawyer R.I Alhassan did not enter into politics to gain wealth or power; that was evident to all of us here. He went into politics to serve.”
“He was full of service blood and commitment and he related equally to whomever he worked with, and to whom he came into contact with,” he said.
He described the former Ghana Ambassador to Germany as a gem of the north, whose lifestyle should serve as a guide to all politicians.
The NPP National Chairman also called on all party members to use the late Alhassan’s death to unite their ranks.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the NPP’s flagbearer in the last two elections, said the late former running-mate will forever be remembered for his immense contributions to building Ghana.
He said Mr. Alhassan was a fearless Statesman who served in various capacities to move the nation forward.
Ghana, he added, needs such patriots to consolidate her democratic credentials.
He said the late Alhassan’s contribution to the success of the Kufuor administration could not be underestimated.
The late Alhassan was Professor Albert Adu Boahene’s running mate in the 1992 Presidential elections –– a race the NPP lost and later wrote the “Stolen Verdict”. The book alleged massive fraud in the elections, which elected Jerry Rawlings to the high office of President of Ghana.
Mr Alhassan, aged 87, died at the 37 Military Hospital on April 15, 2014. He was buried on Sunday in his hometown of Kumbungu in the Northern Region.
