Pro-opposition pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance, is skeptical about the outcome of President Mahama’s directive to the Police to investigate the attack on protesters by some personnel of the service last week.

The protestors  were demonstrating to press home their demand for a new voters’ register when they clashed with the Police who have been criticized for using disproportionate force against unarmed citizens.

President Mahama over the weekend called for a probe into the violence that left many demonstrators injured and hospitalized in what police say was lawful minimum force.

[contextly_sidebar id=”5jSyINi2UBzOVNc2xNXREZu37VDxpzXo”]“I have held discussions with the police authorities and urged the command to review the unfortunate event of last Wednesday in line with policies and procedures that officers are expected to follow in response to incidents of this sort. The basic rights of all citizens must be recognized and respected at all times,” said the President.

Speaking to Citi News however, the National Coordinator of the group, David Asante, said the investigations will not yield any result.

“We find it a little bit strange that the President finds it more expedient to commit the Police Service to inquire and investigate why their own men committed those atrocities. Is it not going to be one of those regular committees of enquiries that the President asked to be set up?The Brazil Committee is just fresh in our memories, other committees the President set up which really ended on sour notes is still fresh in our minds”.

“We do not think that the President is really committed to bringing the perpetrators of these acts to book. We have no such confidence in the President’s words. It is very strange that the President thinks the police who are alleged to have committed the acts are the best persons to investigate their own actions” he lamented.
