Almost double the number of men compared to women admit to taking ‘selfies’ on their phones

In a survey of 2,000 people conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Samsung Electronics, 17 percent of men admitted to taking ‘selfies’ compared to just 10 per cent of women.

This is part of a broader trend, whereby consumers are increasingly looking to do more with their smartphones than just make calls, with photo taking top of the agenda when it comes to UK consumers choosing their ideal phone.

Over half of Britons admit to uploading photos from their smartphones immediately onto their social media profiles to share their content with friends and family. This is more prevalent in females, with 57 per cent taking photos and sharing them instantly versus just 45 per cent of boys.

A third of people admit to missing a great live moment while trying to take the perfect photo, with a quarter of people wishing they had a better camera on their phone at a gig, 24 per cent at a wedding, 32 per cent on holiday and 15 per cent at a sporting event.

Specific features that consumers would like to see on their smartphone include a zoom lens (55 per cent) and a range of different camera modes to help take the perfect shot, whatever the occasion.

Samsung claims that its Galaxy S4 Zoom camera – with 10x optical zoom lens, Wi-Fi connectivity and range of photo-sharing features – is designed to help capture the perfect shot. However, Samsung is not the only smartphone manufacturer putting a heavy emphasis on photography.

Nokia’s Lumia 1020, for example, has a 41-Megapixel camea, Xenon flash, optical image stabilisation, and 3x zoom in stills photo mode.
